The Wheel

The most famous technological achievement of the Sumerians was the invention of the wheel. Their need to import raw materials led to the growth of long-distance trade. This was done largely by river boats and barges, but, on land, wheeled carts were used as an alternative to donkeys.

At first, wheels were made from solid wood alone, and were then made by pegging three curved planks of wood onto a disk.

The Assyrians later went on to use the wheel to move 'siege machines' - platforms to roll against walls whilst attacking cities in expanding their Empire.
