An Egyptian Bronze Nile Perch (MA808)
with recessed and inlaid eyes and resting on two joined papyrus capitals slotted into a pylon support, the sacred fish wearing a finely engraved broad collar and crown composed of a diadem with uraeus surmounted by horns and disk, the fins striated. The particular fish represented in the present example, the oxyrhynchus fish or Mormyrus Kannume, was associated with the demonic god Seth and was thought to have swallowed the dismembered phallus of Osiris. For this reason the fish was reviled in some parts of Egypt and harvested from the waters of the Nile in others.
